Is there a less corrosive paint remover that I could use? We don't use harsh chemicals in my house.

No, unfortunately not. If you are painting in only acrylics, this can be somewhat removed by soaking in hot water. If the project has been sealed or primed, chemicals are the only things that will remove everything fully.
