SONDERThird in my traditional sculptural releases is, Sonder. A 1:9 scale mare in an elegant yet dramatic pose.
Noun: The profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own, which they are constantly living despite one's personal lack of awareness of it. Sonder is not specific to any unique breed and is rather a portrayal of the deep feelings I often fall into when creating my artwork. She was completed within the year of 2023, a time in which I launched myself into a career as a full time artist. I felt the shift in my energy required to achieve this dream. I had to believe in myself fully and whole heartedly to make the leap. Seven years of hard work paid off rather quickly and showed me I am more than capable of making this work. I, like many, often rely heavily on the opinions and perception of others. I can struggle to feel confident and worthy of my own successes. I felt for a long time I needed a backup plan or a security blanket because failure was not an option. I did not believe I could do it. This negative self talk can be crippling. It can hold us back from our full potential and our utmost happiness. Once I realized that we all share similar struggles and triumphs, it gave less power to those frequencies. I had to make the decision myself, for myself. We can easily get caught in our own minds and beliefs without realizing the detriment it can cause to our life. The answers we need are often simple and often the ones that make the most sense. We just need to utilize them and stop holding ourselves back. Sonder embodies all of this change. She pushes against the wind, fighting her own self in the process of learning to be. Inspired from a unique drawing of my youth, I believe the skills I have learnt on my journey to original sculpture are slowly making their way into a specialized style that conveys deep emotion and presence utilizing the equine form. I hope you feel her the same way and wherever you are in your own journey, love and believe in yourself just the same. I promise it gets better.
