WHAT IS MODEL HORSE CUSTOMIZING?
_________________________________________________________________________________
Model horse customizing is the act of repositioning, re-sculpting and/or repainting a Breyer model or other type of manufactured model horse. These can be collected, sold and promoted by the artist, but NOT replicated. This makes the artwork done on Breyer or other models, one of a kind. Breyer and Stone support customizing of their models and encourage artists to produce tutorial, word of mouth and community. It is not considered copyright infringement so long as the models are not being replicated or cast for sale. It is a popular method of learning to sculpt and craft horses being that the original models are accessible, affordable and abundant.
_________________________________________________________________________________
WHAT IS A RESIN MODEL HORSE?
Artists will sculpt their own original model horses on a wire armature. These are then molded in silicon with a 2-3 part mold and cast in urethane resin for sale. Editions can be large or limited, usually 20-200 copies per sculpture. These models are highly detailed and purchased by collectors to be painted, sold, or shown. Some artists will slightly customize attributes of a resin model, but usually they are left as is. The industry directly supports the artist and promoted traditional hand made methods of casting. These models are not for play and are often quite expensive to purchase. They can be found online directly from the artists, promoted on other sale websites and social media.

PROPERTIES
Breyers made of Cellulose Acetate. This plastic is detailed, rigid, durable, easily cut, sanded and primed. It is also very malleable when heated. This makes customizing super easy. Models can be moved using a heat gun or boiling water. Because of the heating properties of this plastic, it is important to include an airhole in hollow cast models to avoid shrinking and bloating in varying temperatures/climates.
HOLLOW CAST: Model is hollow inside and requires an airhole, usually traditional and classic scale models.
SOLID CAST: Model is solid all the way through, no airhole required, usually smaller scales
RESIN: Model is either hollow cast with an airhole or solid cast. Legs are reinforced with wires to avoid warping. Resin is softer, holds more details and is easier to sand. Aerosol primer adheres well. Resin is more durable than one would think.
PEWTER: Some Micro Minis can be cast in Pewter for weight and durability at a small scale. They are easily sanded and primed. They can be lightly bent back to shape.
RIGID PLASTIC: Hard plastic is more desirable for customizing. Easy to cut, sand, heat. Provides a bondable base for clay and primer.
FLEXIBLE PLASTIC: Models such as Collect A, Schleich, Mini Whinnies, are less desirable for customizing and require special care for sculpting and priming. Most aerosol primers will not bond properly and remain tacky to the touch. Using Gesso or other mediums is required. Too much bend in the plastic can cause clay, paint and sealer to crack.

ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES
These are the tools I use for every customizing project!
GO TO TOOLS
I use a mini hack saw for most cutting. A Dremel may also be used (see below). Pliers and wire cutters are always needed on hand. Blue tape is a great base for Apoxie projects. Tin Foil and Toilet Paper rolls work as a great filler. Use a Sharpie or pencil to make marks on a project.
Mini Hack Saw: amzn.to/4jiUo0J
Mini Plier Set: amzn.to/4arZCDd
Vice: amzn.to/3CHII75
Scissors: amzn.to/3CmliUE

Use Silver Sharpie for Dark Models: amzn.to/3Ci4KNM
Pencil: amzn.to/4g2zQXm
Blue Tape: amzn.to/4gYGGP3
Tin Foil: amzn.to/4gVMQzp
Toilet Paper Rolls: Save them!
_________________________________________________________________________________
WIRE
I prefer Aluminum wire as it has a softer feel and can easily be sanded and cut. I sometimes use steel wire for special projects requiring additional reinforcement. A sculpting mesh can be helpful for manes & tails, but not required. These two sizes are what I reach for most.
8 Gauge Armature Wire: amzn.to/3Ca13tt
22 Gauge Wire: amzn.to/4h0oC70
Sculpting Mesh: amzn.to/3C4zVvY
_________________________________________________________________________________
GLUE
Super Glue instantly bonds when baking soda is added ontop. Use a Pointer tool to clear out the nozzle of the bottle to use every last drop. A hot glue gun can be helpful for fast setting, but should not be used for the final bonds of a project.
Super Glue: amzn.to/40kLQhc
Baking Soda: amzn.to/4akXvB2
Pointer Tool for Glue: amzn.to/40CwZjm
Hot Glue Gun: amzn.to/3WoIXum
_________________________________________________________________________________
HEAT TOOLS
Buy a real heat gun! It works the best on moving parts. You can also use boiling water.
Heat Gun: amzn.to/3EbZDz1
_________________________________________________________________________________
SPOT REPAIR
Bondo can be used for spot repairs. It can be applied with rubber gloves and a bit of isopropyl alcohol.
Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty: amzn.to/4apzx7J
Rubber Gloves: amzn.to/3E27Q9a
Toothpicks: amzn.to/3WpiGMH
Isopropyl Alcohol 99% in Container : amzn.to/3Xagjhs
_________________________________________________________________________________
DRILL
I prefer to use a drill in studio for making holes, however a Dremel can also be used in it's place.
Drill Bits: amzn.to/3WiUZp5
Drill: amzn.to/3C2LljT
Dremel: See Below

Using a Dremel allows for quick sanding, drilling and carving. Manual tools can also be used in it's place - but a Dremel is the fastest way to work. Be sure to wear the proper safety equipment when in use!
ALWAYS USE DREMEL BRAND BITS, CUTTERS AND SANDING DRUMS
Other brands are low quality and will break sanding Breyer plastic, potentially causing harm and unneeded hassle. Dremel brand are strong and work easily with Breyer plastic
DREMEL ROTARY TOOL

PRIMER
_________________________________________________________________________________
Primer is required for your sculpting or customizing project as a base for paint to adhere to. You do not need to strip the model of it's original paint, but it should be sanded and cleaned. The primer will cover the original colour. Primer must be sprayed outdoors with the use of a respirator!
STICK TO ONE OF THESE BRANDS!
Pick a colour depending on your project and paint medium.
Primer reacts to humidity level and application methods. Play with different brands to find the best match.
DUPLICOLOUR : amzn.to/4js5wIQ
Dries to a matte, chalky and thin finish - Sandable or Filler versions both work based on preference. I prefer sandable in grey or red.
RUSTOLEUM : amzn.to/4jrz9Kg
Dries to a satin, tacky and thick finish - Be sure to let cure for a full 6 days.
TAMIYA : amzn.to/4g7b48K
Dries to a satin, chalky and medium finish - Regular and Fine versions both work based on preference

DIFFERENT KINDS OF CLAY
_________________________________________________________________________________
AIR DRY CLAY: a clay that air dries over time. This clay can be brittle, is prone to cracking & shrinkage. It is not ideal for Breyer customizing.
POLYMER CLAY: A plastic-like clay used for original sculpture and charms. It remains workable until baked to cure. Armatures must be made of wire and tin foil, oven safe materials. It can not be used for Breyer customizing directly onto a plastic model.
COSCLAY: A type of polymer that bakes to a cure with flexible properties. It is good for fragile pieces on a sculpture.
OIL CLAY: A clay that becomes workable when heated, and hardens when cooled. It never cures. It is good for Original sculptures and practicing. You can reuse this clay over and over.
EPOXY PUTTY: A two part resin based clay that once mixed has a working time of up to 2 hours before curing. It air dries, sandable, waterproof, permanent and does not shrink/crack. This is the best clay for model horse customizing!
FREE FORM AIR: An epoxy putty that cures to a super lightweight solid

TOOLS
These are my go-to tools, the only handful you should need
CLAY SHAPER TOOLS
Royal Sovereign is my favourite brand, they are high quality and strong. These eventually break down over time. You can get cheap sets on Amazon, but the quality is hit or miss. Size 0 is my go-to, but size 2 can also be useful. Extra firm is best for Epoxy clay. Taper Point is most useful.

Colour Shaper Size 0 Taper Point Firm : amzn.to/4dvPquh

DETAIL TOOL
This is the best tool for sculpting tiny details. The tips are replaceable.
Gum Stimulator : https://amzn.to/3T2c1Gv
CALIPERS : amzn.to/4czTYyj
Use a pair of calipers for measuring your work. These can be purchased on their own or found in a simple geometry set.
2 SPOONS
Label two spoons for part A & part B to better retrieve the clay out of the containers. Go to your local thrift store!
Set of 6 Spoons : amzn.to/473lOBZ
_________________________________________________________________________________
SMOOTHING AGENT & SURFACE PREP
Use water or isopropyl alcohol to smooth the clay. 99% is strongest.
Isopropyl 99% : amzn.to/3Xagjhs
Use a small container to hold the alcohol for dipping tools and your fingers. I like to use the Sistema ToGo cups, but a fluid pump also works really well.
Sistema ToGo : amzn.to/3SX0NTE
Fluid Pump : amzn.to/3SXgmuC
Jar for Water : Use a jar to keep water on hand!
You will need to wipe off your toll of excess clay/isopropyl as you work. Use Scott Blue Shop Towels. These are durable and lint free. Fold into 4 and use each side until saturated. You can use normal paper towel as well if that is all you have.
Scott Blue Shop Towels : amzn.to/3WVgbkP
Plastic Lid : Use a plastic lid off a yogurt or similar food container for clay while you work, this prevents it from sticking to your desk surface and damaging it.
_________________________________________________________________________________
GLOVES
Gloves are optional. Note that you may develop an allergy to this clay in which you will be forced to wear gloves. I risk it because I like to use my fingers when I sculpt. If you use them, pick the right size so they are as tight to your fingers as possible.
Rubber Gloves: amzn.to/3E27Q9a
_________________________________________________________________________________
OTHER TOOLS AND CLEANUP
If you want to keep momentum on a project, using a space heater or heat lamp can help cure the clay quicker.
Space Heater : amzn.to/42oGO5O
If you are working off a touch screen device for references or need to send a message. Get a touch stylus so you do not touch the device. This clay will ruin clothing and anything it comes in contact with as it cures to a solid.
Touch Screen Stylus : amzn.to/3SUJLFK
Use a scrub brush, warm water and soap to clean up your fingers when done sculpting. I like Dawn Dish Soap.

Valuable in original sculpture work or filling large areas of your Breyer custom, Free Form air works like Apoxie but dries to a super lightweight solid. It easily sands and holds a rigid shape for sculpting details ontop. Keeping weight down is important.
THIS CLAY MUST BE USED WITH GLOVES & A RESPIRATOR
Use in a well ventilated area, it has a very strong odor!
I don't use tools, just my hands when working with this clay.
FAST VARIANT
Use the Fast version for quicker results. I personally use this one!

SCULPTING WITH MONSTER CLAY
_________________________________________________________________________________
Valuable in original sculpture work, medallions, or practice but NOT model horse customizing. Monster Clay is the perfect oil based clay that is infinitely reusable. It does not cure. It cools to a rigid solid and warms easily for soft working, all the way to a liquid for pouring. It is also helpful in mold making. Supposedly the clay can be primed and painted, though I do not recommend that. In order to cast a Monster Clay sculpture, a waste mold is required to achieve a hard copy for the demands of casting. This clay allows for long working times and easy fixes in the preliminary sculpture phases.

CLAY
Monster Clay comes in Terra Cotta or Grey in Soft, Medium & Hard
Firmness can be mixed. I prefer Medium. Grey is slightly translucent but both work the same. This clay heats to a liquid and cools to a solid at room temperature. It is good for practice, original and medallion sculpting. It can be infinitely reused and never cures.

HEATING
This clay heats to a liquid. The container is heat safe, it can be placed in the oven at low temperature, or warmed in the microwave. If you want ready to use clay, heat in a small crockpot. Sometimes that keeps the clay too warm, so a multifunction crock pot is best. Use a glass measuring cup for heating and pouring liquid melted clay.

MEDALLION SCULPTING

SCULPTING WITH POLYMER CLAY
_________________________________________________________________________________
Polymer is a nice option of clay you can bake to a solid. Good for original sculptures, sculptural elements and practice. Using a wire armature, this clay has an infinite working time in its natural state. It has a plastic like consistency. It comes in many colours which bake the to the same tone. I find it to be a little brittle and it can be easy to burn the sculpture in the curing process. Parts can be baked in layers as you work. A great tool for the toolbox with fun outcomes! You cannot attach this to a Breyer custom because it needs to be baked to cure. Be sure to use armature elements that are oven safe!

DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAINTS & MEDIUMS
_________________________________________________________________________________
GESSO: a type of surface prep that is brushed on. Can be used to fix minor blemishes in painting and prepping.
REDUCER: improves fluidity and blending properties of acrylic paint. Often used to thin the paint for airbrushing.
ACRYLIC: A water based paint that dries quickly. It is made of pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion. It dries flexible and cleans easily with soap and water.
OIL: An oil based paint that dries slowly. It is made of pigment suspended in an drying oil, commonly linseed. It has a stronger pigmentation and vibrancy. It can be layered slowly in thin layers with dry time in-between. Cleans with oil soap and water or turpentine.
PASTEL: A chalky pigmented powder, also referred to as 'soft' pastel. It can come in a stick, powder or compressed pan. Do not use Oil pastels!
AIRBRUSH: A paint method using compressed air and handheld spray tool. Airbrush paints are designed to run straight through an airbrush with no thinner.
PENCILS: In the model horse hobby, a 'pencil' is any watercolor pencil, pencil crayon, pastel pencil or charcoal pencil used to create desired hairing or detail effect on the model.
SEALER : An aerosol varnish used to seal the model. Some types can also be brushed on.

PAINTING ESSENTIALS
With any paint project, you will need the following 4 things.
1. Palette | 2. Water | 3. Paper Towel | 4. Protection
_________________________________________________________________________________
PALETTE
You can use either a wet or dry palette. A dry palette can be a paper plate, tin foil, plastic pallete or plastic lid off a yogurt container. I prefer using plastic container lids as they can be easily cleaned and reused. A wet palette consists of a sealed container holding a sponge and wax paper. These keep the paints moist for the duration of the project and up to multiple weeks or months. Oils work best on glass - more on that below!
Wet Palette : amzn.to/42uiuzL
Container Lids : Save from your Recycling!
Paint Palette: amzn.to/3PY4HtA
_________________________________________________________________________________
WATER
Use a jar from old spaghetti sauce or a new mason jar to hold water at your desk. I prefer glass because it is weighted and will not tip over. My personal favourite item is the Speedball Mona Lisa paint jar being that it has a wire mesh in the bottom to help rinse the brushes without stirring up the gunk at the bottom of the jar. The fresh water container also works fairly well.
Mason Jar: amzn.to/3CjcLls
Brush Pot : amzn.to/42FyHSy
Fresh Water Dispenser : amzn.to/40srhPT
_________________________________________________________________________________
PAPER TOWEL
You can use regular Paper Towels, but Shop towels are lint free, more absorbent and stronger.
Blue Shop Towels : amzn.to/3WVgbkP
_________________________________________________________________________________
PROTECTION
Be sure to protect your paintwork and project from finger prints and oil on your hands. I use a rubber glove to hold the model while working in any medium. Additionally I like to use soft hand towels to rest the model on my lap, desk or hold to protect the paint. Plastic wrap & Blue tape is also useful for masking and holds.
Rubber Gloves : amzn.to/3E27Q9a
Hand Towels : amzn.to/4g4iKIB
Blue Tape: amzn.to/4gYGGP3

BRUSHES
Brushes are based on feel, personal preference, and the project being executed. I recommend purchasing brushes in person at a store where you can feel them. I prefer soft, acrylic grade synthetic brushes. I also prefer a metal or plastic handle as they do not saturate and decompose with water. These are some of my tested favorites.
Various Flat & Round Brushes to Preference : amzn.to/40rbLnx
I like brand Royal Langnickel for quality and softness. Pick what works for you!
I have jars full of various sizes, round, flat & filbert.
Detail Brush Set | Golden Maple : amzn.to/40q8kNK
These are wonderful detail brushes at a discounted price. I always grab for these. Start here!
Detail Brush | Windsor & Newton Kolinsky Sable Series 7 : amzn.to/4avXv1u
SIZE #0 | Good for traditional hairing and markings
SIZE #00 | Good for Fine Traditional hairing, intricate markings, eye detailing
SIZE #000 | Good for Stablemate Hairing, eyes, small micro detail.
Sable or Kolinsky and synthetic counterparts are wonderfully fine for intricate detail work. These are pricey, but worth it! I use one of three sizes in the Windsor & Newton brand. They are designed to hold paint and flow nicely. These do damage over time and with use and will need to be replaced often.
Fan Brush | Princeton Fan 20/0
I like to use a fan brush for hairing detail. I prefer firm bristles and small size. I do have the softer version as well, and it does a good job too.
Princeton Fan Brush | 20/0 | Softer Bristles: amzn.to/3Wwj77T
Princeton Fan Brush | 20/0 | Firm Bristles: amzn.to/42lCNzf
Hair Detail Brush | Princeton Round Size 3: amzn.to/42tfeo3
I use a size 3 brush for my hairing detail on the whole body of the horse. A bigger brush with a fine point sometimes works better than a super fine brush.
Be sure to clean you brushes well to avoid damage. Never store them bristles down or forget them in water. Clean with soap & water, lay flat to dry. General's brush cleaner can revive even the toughest brush damage!
Brush Cleaner : amzn.to/4g7D1gE
Use 2" cling wrap to wrap the ends of the brush for a better grip.
2" Vet Wrap: amzn.to/42ocqZu

OTHER USEFUL TOOLS
Have cotton swabs on hand for touchups! Nail Tees are much pointier and finer for detailing with pastel as well.
Cotton Swabs: amzn.to/4hpWGJx
Nail Tees: amzn.to/4joAGRc
Micro Applicators: amzn.to/3WoJFb1
Buff imperfections with a fine sandpaper.
1000+ Grit Sandpaper: amzn.to/3WwbMFr
Use these air tight containers for storing paint mixes.
Sistema ToGo: amzn.to/3SX0NTE
Helpful for quick setting and drying of acrylic work.
Hair Dryer: amzn.to/3Ef1hQs
Record your paint mixes and recipes on small cards. This helps for repairs and understanding colour theory for each new piece.
Index Cards: amzn.to/4h88fWi
Remove lint, hairs and blemishes gently.
Tweezers: amzn.to/3E74Fgk
Clay Shaper: amzn.to/3Xam2nB
Use a watercolour pencil, charcoal pencil or pencil crayon to draw out markings before painting.
Water Colour Pencils: amzn.to/4htsRrL
Squeeze every last drop of paint out of your tubes!
Paint Tube Squeegees: amzn.to/4jpPkrq
Use a clamp to hold your paper towel down to the desk.
Clamps: amzn.to/3E42D0F
Keep a bottle of fresh water on your desk for thinning paint or cleanup! These squeeze bottles are my favourite.
Squeeze Bottles: amzn.to/40v8FPl
Store tube paint upside down on nails in the wall or pushpins in a cork board.
Bulldog Clips: amzn.to/3Q0Chz3
_________________________________________________________________________________
MEDIUMS
My top 3 mediums used for all projects!
Gesso: amzn.to/4geGUjM
Use Gesso for prepping and touchups. Can also help in making opaque whites.
Gloss Varnish Liquitex: amzn.to/3E4cof8
Use Gloss varnish for eyes, hooves and mouth details. Do not use nail polish, it will yellow and crack over time.
Folk Art Blending Gel : amzn.to/4jCAez0
Use with acrylic paints to extend dry time and blend similarly to oils.
_________________________________________________________________________________
SEALER
_________________________________________________________________________________
In model horses, we want the finish to be matte or satin, and not typically glossy.
Sealer can be dependent on preference, climate, availability and mediums you are painting with. These are my recommended and tested brands.
Testor’s DullCote: amzn.to/4hqlJw7
Testor's is industry standard and used consistently by many prolific artists. It can be pricey and the containers are small. It gives the truest matte finish. This can sometimes dull colour. It does react negatively to some Vallejo colours. It can be used on pastel, oil & acrylic mediums.
Mr. Super Clear Flat: amzn.to/4h6sUtD
Mr. Super Clear Flat UV: amzn.to/3Wsybn7
Mr. Super Clear Smooth: amzn.to/4joOvPD
I really like this brand. The can is slightly larger, and the finish is comparable to Testors. It can have a slightly more satin finish to it. It has shown results of cracking if laid on too thick. The UV option adds UV protection to your work. The Smooth version is to smooth out the surface slightly. It can be used on pastel & acrylic mediums.
Windsor & Newton Professional Matte : amzn.to/3Ej0q16
Windsor & Newton Professional Satin : amzn.to/4g7XXEg
I really like this brand as well. Be sure to use the Professional version! I like both the matte & satin product. This is more of a final seal 'varnish' however, and may not work as well for in-between layers of paint, but rather final seal. Works great for oils! It can be used on pastel, oil & acrylic mediums.
I have also tried these brands and they offer a more satin sheen. They are not as consistent. They offer little tooth and have a waterproofing property allowing proper layering to be challenging if laid on too thick.
Plaid: amzn.to/4g9uzgR
Americana: amzn.to/40jPHec
Rustoleum: amzn.to/42j6dho
I have been recommend by some artists to use Krylon matte, though I have not had much success with Krylon products and have not fully tested this product myself.

AIRBRUSHING
You will need 4 things to start airbrushing.
1. Airbrush | 2. Hose | 3. Compressor | 4. Cleaning Tools
Stick with Iwata brand. All parts are replaceable, easy to find and of the highest quality. I have tested other airbrushes and will always recommend Iwata. You should only ever need two airbrushes in one lifetime.

Iwata Eclipse HP-CS | 0.35mm : amzn.to/3Wsb1gs
If you would like to take your airbrushing to the next level and once you understand how to both paint and clean- the Micron is unmatched. The CM-C Plus allows for additional airflow control at the airbrush level.
Iwata Micron CM-C Plus | 0.23mm : amzn.to/4gpJ00x
The Iwata Micron can also reduce to a 0.18mm head & needle which is very small. I do not personally use this system in mine.
You can convert the Iwata Micron to a 0.18mm system!
15405 | Micron Needle | 0.18mm : amzn.to/4hbuOcv
15351 | Micron 0.18mm Head System : amzn.to/42qOF30
Shop Replacement Parts Here: www.iwata-airbrush.com/airbrush-parts.html
Use an airbrush stand for one or more airbrushes being used. This avoids damage and paint pooling
Airbrush Holder : amzn.to/3Eo4HRi
Optional for your setup is an airbrush hood. I personally do not use one of these.
Airbrushing Hood: amzn.to/3ExDlrC

HOSE
The Iwata airbrush will require a 1/8" BSP airbrush hose. This will connect one end to the airbrush & one end to the compressor. The right adapter is required to connect to the air compressor - see more on that below!
Airbrush Hose 6ft : amzn.to/4hsOpED
Airbrush Hose 10ft : amzn.to/3Eg6xTW
I strongly recommend a Quick Connect. If you have more than one airbrush, you can attach these to each for easy switching between one compressor hose. This is also helpful for cleaning.
Purchase this kit for one airbrush: Quick Connect: amzn.to/40lHIxo
Add this to all extra airbrushes: Quick Connect Male Only: amzn.to/4aumTVc

COMPRESSOR
You may use either a HOBBY compressor or a SHOP compressor for airbrushing.
I recommend a shop compressor as it will perform better and last longer.
I recommend watching the videos listed below better explaining everything.

CLEANING TOOLS
I use either water or isopropyl to clean the brush in-between paint changes. I find airbrush cleaner doesn't do much for me. I like to keep my liquids in a 8oz Squeeze bottle for easy use.
Water : From the tap!
Isopropyl Alcohol 99% : amzn.to/3Xagjhs
Squeeze Bottles: amzn.to/40v8FPl
A non-negotiable is the Iwata Tool Kit. The pliers are plastic lined for safe removal of sticky or over-tight parts without scratching the airbrush. It also comes with all the essential screwdrivers and wrenches for your fleet of Iwata brushes.
Iwata Tool Kit : amzn.to/40Tvm1b
You will also need a Cleaning pot for spraying the discarded paint. These often come with helpful need tools and other cleaning tools.
Cleaning Pot: amzn.to/40HomEa
You will need a container to soak parts in Isopropyl. Find something at a thrift store!
Glass Container for Soaking: amzn.to/4hFeJeO
When working, sometimes the tip of the airbrush needle can build up with dried paint. I use a soft sponge with a bit of isopropyl can clean that right up!
Sponge : amzn.to/4gjm2b3
I use an old paintbrush for brushing the cup out in cleaning and paint changes.
Old Paintbrush : A long bristled, old brush
Prevent small parts from getting lost and rolling off the desk, plus an easy to follow guide.
Airbrush Cleaning Mat : amzn.to/4h4v6Sy
Get into the small crevices of the airbrush with this syringe.
Monoject Syringe : amzn.to/3E75llR
Cotton Swabs, Nail Tees and Micro applicators are super useful in cleaning the airbrush.
Cotton Swabs: amzn.to/4hpWGJx
Nail Tees: amzn.to/4joAGRc
Micro Applicators: amzn.to/3WoJFb1
These are amazing for cleaning the small parts of the airbrush that need some more scrubbing. They are made of plastics so they will not scratch and are fine enough to insert in the needle holes.
Gum Proxabrush : amzn.to/4avlA8j
Red | Moderate
Turquoise | Wide
This is a great tool for cleaning the difficult grooves of the airbrush without damaging the coating.
Stiff Fix-it Brush: amzn.to/40XRur2
If not buying the Tool kit, you will need a wrench. A small tube of lube comes with the purchase of a new airbrush.
Lube : Included in airbrush box : amzn.to/42t2ZI7
Wrench : amzn.to/4aAjMLp
_________________________________________________________________________________
PAINTING TOOLS
Use a respirator when working with airbrush paints and large sprays.
Mask Only: amzn.to/42ikIlq
Vapour Filters 6001: amzn.to/3ChJBmL
I like to use syringes in my painting process to measure my mixes.
3mL Syringes : amzn.to/40uBhZ7
Use these air tight containers for storing paint mixes.
Sistema ToGo: amzn.to/3SX0NTE
I love this tool for easy mixing of thinner or paints.
Badger Paint Mixer : amzn.to/4aqyMLV
Vallejo Flow Improver works really well for thinning paints.
Flow Improver : amzn.to/40v4Dq0
Specifically for airbrushing, using a glass desk is a great strategy. When things get too messy, simply use a glass cleaner & razor blade to remove dried paint.
Glass Desk: A smooth surface!
a turntable can help in the airbrushing process.
Lazy Susan : amzn.to/3CkZuZA
_________________________________________________________________________________
REPLACEMENT PARTS
I like to keep both a replacement Nozzle and Needle on hand. This is to prevent delays in the middle of a painting project. These are the most likely to damage as your learn to use the airbrush.
The Iwata Eclipse Runs a 0.35mm nozzle & needle
The Iwata Micron Runs a 0.23mm nozzle & needle
16172 | Eclipse Needle | 0.35mm : amzn.to/40kkqrK
16042 | Eclipse Nozzle | 0.35mm : amzn.to/40JcFgj

AIRBRUSH PAINT
You do not need airbrush specific paints in order to airbrush. Any acrylic can be thinned with water or reducer to flow through the brush. However, if you are starting out and want an easy paint to add to the airbrush, I highly recommend Golden High Flow. They are a very thin, but pigmented paint that can be used directly into the airbrush. The finish is a little bit tacky and more satin, but cures nicely.

PIGMENT OPTIONS
Pastels are often refereed to as 'soft' and can be purchased in a stick. These are like a high quality chalk that are easily blended on paper. For model horses, these should be shaved off into a powder and then brushed onto the model. This is an example of that. The more you spend, the higher the quality. Do NOT use Oil Pastels.
Soft Pastel Sticks in Earth Tones: amzn.to/3E6cCCp
Additionally Earth pigments are popular among some artists. These are already a powder and without a binder, they are naturally more pigmented.
Earth Pigments: www.earthpigments.com/dry-powder-pigments/?srsltid=AfmBOoov4519tLlzm0dE7I-rwWJx5DbXFqLy5SoLFf-8FRMCeQ2PAGBA
I personally recommend and prefer PanPastels. These are a compressed powder similar to an eyeshadow. I find them the most pigmented and require the least amount of layers. Though expensive, one tray lasts a very long time.

Oils are a slow drying medium that offer vibrancy and pigmentation. Oils can be used on their own or applied to acrylic base coats. They blend easy and offer a smooth natural look.

PAINTS
Oil paints are pretty standard in terms of quality across the board. I personally prefer the Windsor & Newton Aritst's Colour. Gamblin is also a good brand. This limited palette can create all coat colours through mixing.
Windor & Newton Store: amzn.to/3CnoTlr
PALETTE
You will need a palette knife to mix colours. I prefer a short tipped one, but a longer tip may work better for you.
Palette Knife: amzn.to/4gdFLJc
You can use a glass sheet as a reusable palette. You can also use tin foil. If you want the paints to dry up faster, cardboard absorbs some of the oil.
Glass Cutting Board: amzn.to/4jkPtMR
Use a razor blade to scrape the palette clean when the paint has dried up.
Razor Blade : amzn.to/3PLrLf3
If you prefer to save your colours, cover and seal them in a wet palette. The glass cutting boards fit nicely in these.
Wet Palette : amzn.to/3WswBS0
Blue Shop Towels are lint free! Use them to clean your palette knife.
Blue Shop Towel : amzn.to/3WVgbkP
Use rubber gloves to avoid contact with the model during holds.
Rubber Gloves : amzn.to/3E27Q9a

Sizes 1, 2, 4, 6
Mop Brushes : amzn.to/4h501y6
Use a 1" or 1/2" Mop to blend. You will need a couple of these! Princeton brand is the best.

PHOTOGRAPHY
When you are finished your project, you will have to photograph it!
Be sure to have good light, and ideally a DSLR camera. This is what I use.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Camera body, capable of high quality photos & video.
Canon 90D : amzn.to/40vcUKy
wide lens for Traditional projects.
18-55mm Lens: amzn.to/4h3TPpP
Low focal length lens for full body & 3/4 shots.
50mm Lens: amzn.to/4g8anfm
Close up lens for stablemates, micros and getting close for details.
105mm Macro Lens: amzn.to/40KHG3m
Extra wide lens for outdoor shots and larger projects.
10-18mm Wide Lens: amzn.to/3CngBKr
I use a heavy duty tripod with a full swivel head and quick release. I prefer the tripod with the fast clips on the legs.
Tripod: amzn.to/4arMG02
The only light I use for studio work and photography.
Neewer Ring Light: amzn.to/4hoechf
A backdrop and stand. Use whatever fabric or paper that works best for you. A soft bend in the backdrop reduces harsh shadows. You can also use a photo box.
Backdrop Stand: amzn.to/4hoejcQ
I like to use a high quality SD card when shooting
SD Cards: amzn.to/4g8nU6n
