A hybrid Equine and Pterois (also know as a lion fish), is a magical sea creature that can breathe both underwater and on land. He is fearless, strong, beautiful and bold. Out of the ruins of challenging times, he raises up triumphant and brave. He marks a moment in time linking back to the beginning of time itself. He is the metaphor between attraction and poison. Fight and Surrender. Poise and Cower. Kai is the Hawaiian word for Ocean, dangerous but also serene. A pivotal equine form in a pivotal creative time. This is Kai. The challenges, the ocean and the magic of art... In the model horse world, there has always been a strong presence to the Equine form merged with the underwater form. Fish serve as a wonderful muse to art for their whimsical colours and unique shapes. I came into this hobby in 2017 at the peak of Kylee Parks and her creation of Takeshi. We then saw several pieces year after year embodying the merge of horse and fish. I always admired these but never did much for fantasy design. After the inaugural creation of Tallulah, I knew I wanted to explore more. I was watching a Planet Earth documentary when a Lion Fish came across the screen. He immediately struck inspiration into my heart and I knew I wanted to create a hybrid, but with extra focus on the horse. This was my first time attempting wings of any kind and they had to be detachable, so it often felt more like an engineering project than an art project. With that, I have never doubted my abilities as much as I had I working through this project. He tested me around every corner. I redid elements of both paint and sculpture countless times. But the outcome was certainly worth it. Kai embodies the rebirth after challenging times, and he launches me into a new era of work, unbridled, unfiltered and unafraid. The most challenging ones always poise the biggest reward in the end.
Kai debuted at Lethbridge Live Show placing 1st in the Fantasy Colour class with a Champion win for the Colour/Workmanship Division. He then placed Overall Reserve Champion of the Artist Resin Division.
